India adds 6.5 million GSM subscribers in April

 India's GSM subscriber base grew by 0.98 percent in April, adding 6.50 million mobile phone users, with Bharti Airtel alone signing up over 2.01 million customers, according to data released by Cellular Operators Association of India.

The total number of GSM subscribers in the country crossed 670.57 million as against 664.08 million in March.

Airtel currently has 183 million subscribers.

Idea Cellular followed Airtel by adding 1.5 million subscribers to have a total number of 114 million subscribers.

Uninor, which had all its 22 licences cancelled following the Supreme Court's ruling earlier this month, added 1.1 million subscribers to take its subscriber-count to 44 million.

Aircel added 1 million users, thus taking its subscribers base to 64 million. Vodafone added 0.8 million subscribers to have a total of 151 million users.

Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL), which is a CDMA player, in a separate statement, said it added 2,05,590 customers to have a total of 16.1 million subscribers as on April 30. The firm which operates in India under MTS brand also stands to lose its licences following the apex court's order.
