Session on CET counselling a hit

Jnana Degula: Parents advised to let students choose subjects of their interest

Parents and students evinced keen interest in a session on the CET counselling process held as part of Jnana Degula on Sunday.

Many found it a timely intervention as the government is beginning online counselling process from this academic year.

Both students and parents had a lot of queries relating to the counselling that is set to begin in the second week of July. Rashmi V, Commissioner, Department of PU Education, interacted with the audience explaining the counselling procedure in detail.

She advised parents not to put undue pressure on children. Science courses have become inaccessible and expensive, and the department is working towards demystifying the science related courses, Rashmi said.

Pure science courses have also taken a blow due to rush for the professional courses, she added. On the counselling process, the commissioner asked both students and parents to go through the department website and the CET brochure completely before appearing for verification of documents.  “The department has received many applications for the CET with mandatory details like the date of birth left unfilled. To avoid such errors, it is advisable to thoroughly go through the instructions given by the department,” she said.

Online procedure

Last year, the counselling went on for 110 days, and parents had to make an average of five trips to the counselling centres. However, this year, the online procedure has been introduced to avoid the cumbersome process of seat selection, she said. Students will be given a hand book and an audio visual CD to help them in the process.

Students will have to appear in person only for verification of documents,  which will be conducted at the helpline centres, prior to the seat selection process. There will be mock seat selection exercise at the helpline centres at the time of verification of documents to help students get hands-on experience of the process and the seat selection will be an online process.

The commissioner also asked students to be clear about their choices at the time of counselling. “We see many students enquiring about colleges at the last minute. I suggest that they do prior research by going through the AICTE and the MCI websites.” Students must also be clear about whether they want to select the seat based on town, stream or college, she added.

The department has also planned to send SMS and email to students recording the time they log in and log out of the website every time. The seat allotment will take place over ten days. Students will get enough time to key in the preferences. Also, she asked students to actively voice their opinion on the Facebook page of the Karnataka Examination Authority to have a dialogue with the department.

Akshath Bharataraj, a student, felt the lecture on CET counselling procedure was very helpful. Akshay V V, another student, said: “I want to pursue engineering though I am not sure about the college. The lecture helped us.”
