DUTA seeks action on assault on DU teacher

Last Updated 30 May 2012, 20:22 IST

A law professor at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre was assaulted by three unidentified youth on Tuesday.

According to his colleagues, three youths beat up professor A K Ahuja when he was on his way to the Metro station.

“He is a deputy superintendent of examination in the LLB exams which are going on. I suspect he was attacked as he is responsible for taking action against students caught using unfair means during the examination,” said professor’s colleague.

Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) have sent letters to the university officials regarding the incident seeking an action against the culprits.

“The university officials must lodge a formal police complaint and insist on a comprehensive investigation to fix criminal culpability.  A teacher should do his work or constantly keep thinking about his safety,” said Amar Deo Sharma, DUTA president.

According to DUTA members, the university’s recluctance in taking up this matter will set a dangerous precedent.

The teachers on duty will feel intimidated and discouraged from fearlessly discharging their professional responsibilities on campus, they said.

“It is the prime duty of the university to ensure security of teachers at least while they are discharging their official duty. And to cap it all, the teacher was brutally beaten up in the university campus,” added Sharma.
