Jagan fails to get bail

Last Updated 01 June 2012, 19:10 IST

The CBI court on Friday rejected the second bail petition of Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who appealed to the court to allow him campaign for his party candidates in the 12 June by-elections to 18 assembly and 1 Lok Sabha seats. The CBI special court had struck down the first bail petition on May 28, the day Jagan was produced in the court.

While denying bail to Jagan, the special court agreed with the CBI’s plea that a high profile person like Jagan could influence the case if left out on bail.  Counsel tried to impress upon the court that Jagan had never interfered with the investigation that began some nine months ago, and he will cooperate with the CBI in further investigation. The judge pronounced his verdict after three hour long arguments on both sides on the third day.

Meanwhile, arguments in the Andhra Pradesh HC on the quash petition filed by Jagan and custody petition of the CBI are over and the judge reserved the verdict till midday of Saturday. While the state waited with bated breath for the bail of Jaganmohan Reddy, evangelist K A Paul and high profile socialite and a film artist Tara Chowdhary got out of jail on bail.

Paul’s advocate Pratap Kumar said the evangelist and his three other associates arrested on May 21 last at Ongole where he was campaigning for his party candidate, were granted conditional bail by principal sessions court here on Thursday to enable his campaign.
