Measures for ground water recharge

Speaking on a discussion in the Assembly on the drought situation, he said over-exploitation of ground water had resulted in drying up of dug-wells.

Ground water resources need to be systematically developed. Recharge drains need to be dug for catching rainwater, he said. He demanded that the government earmark Rs 10,000 crore for irrigation in its next budget. Seed banks need to be upgraded with sufficient stock for the next sowing season. Jayachandra said the government should utilise the NREGS as a means to improve food security.
