Tint ban: A day more to go

Last Updated 04 June 2012, 20:09 IST

Four-wheeler owners in Bangalore have one more day to get the sun film off their vehicle windows. With the deadline expiring on Tuesday, the City traffic police have decided against offering any more extentions and will start penalising vehicle owners for violations from Wednesday.

City Police Commissioner B G Jyothi Prakash Mirji told the media on Monday that vehicle owners got sufficient time after the deadline was extended by 15 days from the initial deadline of May 19. “We also set up 10 special centres in the city where our people removed the tint films for free. We are going for the implementation from Wednesday,” he said.

However, the police action will start a day earlier in Hubli, although there is confusion about the rule and its implementation in other cities across the State. RTO officials in Mysore told Deccan Herald that they would create awareness among the vehicle-owners first before implementing the ban. Although Davangere police appeared clueless, their Belgaum counterparts have set the deadline at June 15, beyond which offenders would be penalised.

The Supreme Court had recently banned the use of black sun film on car glasses from May 4. According to Rule 100 (2) of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, the windscreen and the rear windows should have a visual light transmission (VLT) of not less than 70 per cent. For the side windows, minimum visibility should be 50 per cent. However, black films or materials like cloth curtains are not allowed.

First time offenders will be fined Rs 100, while repeat offenders will be required to shell out upto Rs 300. The vehicle owner’s driving licence may also be compounded and recommended for suspension. M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner (Traffic and security), said the SC has not only banned the use of tinted film but have also directed the police to implement the order.
