Deshmukh and Shinde under CBI scanner

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its affidavit has stated that two former Maharashtra chief ministers and senior bureaucrats have been examined in connection with the Adarsh Housing scam.

The CBI affidavit signed by superintendent of police Ravindra Singh states, “…allegations made by the petitioner against Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, Shri Sunil Tatkare and others are being thoroughly investigated by CBI.”

While refusing to disclose the evidence gleaned so far, the investigating agency stated that CBI had examined all relevant witnesses, “…including two previous CMs, the Principal Secy and the present minister of the State Maharashtra. Whatever evidence has comeon record are being ascertained on the basis of other evidences and that can be completed at a later stage after completion of investigation and prior to filing of final report before the appropriate court. The same cannot be disclosed at this stage in reply affidavit of this petition.”

The affidavit was filed in the Bombay High Court last Friday, in response to an affidavit filed by social activist Pravin Wategaonkar alleging that former Maharashtra and present Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh allegedly ‘owns proxy two apartments,’ in the 31-storey high-rise constructed on a contentious plot purportedly belonging to Ministry of Defence, in south Mumbai.

The investigating agency in its statement clarified that the references made by the petitioner based on the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Adarsh Co - Op. Housing Society highlighting certain acts of commission and omission on part of public servants were “…being thoroughly investigated by CBI.”

The affidavit stated that the investigation being at crucial stage, “…efforts are being made to finalize the same at the earliest and thereafter CBI shall file its Final Report U/s 173 Cr. PC.” In the last hearing CBI had informed the court that it would be filing its charge-sheet in the case: BAI/2011/A0006-Mum by June 15 before the next hearing posted for June 18.
