HC stays CMC membership cancellation order

Last Updated 14 May 2009, 17:55 IST

Vijay, who contested from the 34th ward of the Kolar Gold Fields City Municipal Council, belonged to Adi Andhra Scheduled Caste.

In the last elections, he converted himself and contested by producing a caste certificate of Christian community’s BCM-A and got elected.

In this context, Mahada Begum, who lost to Vijay in the CMC elections, questioned Vijay’s caste and challenged it in the KGF’s JMFC court.

Judge D T Puttarangaswamy nullified the membership of Vijay and ordered the deputy commissioner to conduct fresh elections to ward number 34, within a period of 90 days. The orders were issued on April 9.

Vijay challenged the order in the High Court. The High Court has stayed the JMFC orders and has ordered Vijay to continue as the CMC member, till the matter was settled.
