The Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament on Tuesday survived a no-confidence motion moved by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s party against him, in a fresh trial of strength for the new government.
Abdulla Shahid survived the no-confidence motion brought forward by the Maldivian Democratic Party with 45 MPs voting in favour of him while 25 against him in the Majlis which has a strength of 77.
Seventy two members were present in the house during the voting while two members abstained. Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Ahmed Nazim chaired the session. MDP lawmakers had charged Shahid of failing to follow parliamentary regulations, alleging that he had been making decisions relating to significant issues without consulting other parties.
