State pharma policy in a month

Last Updated 11 June 2012, 18:45 IST

A pharmaceuticals policy for the State is ready and will be placed before the Cabinet within a month, Dr E V Ramana Reddy, principal secretary, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, said on Monday.

Speaking at the annual day celebrations of the Government College of Pharmacy, Reddy said the draft policy had been circulated within the department and final touches were being given to it before sending it to the government.

One of the main concerns of the policy is to boost biotechnological and pharmaceutical sectors to help them develop comprehensively within the next 10 years, he added.

Reddy said even though Karnataka was not as developed as states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra vis-a-vis pharmacy, the State did have industries performing well in pharma research and development.

The State has a large scope for domestic and foreign investments in drug production and related manufacturing, he added. Reddy said pharma students had a bright future in terms of job opportunities in the State and that the pharma policy would go a long way in helping them in this regard.
