MCMS row: College seeks more time

St Aloysius College which had started the Master of Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) post graduate Course without formal approval from the Mangalore University has asked students to cooperate with patience, till the issue has been resolved.

The students of 2008-2010 and 2009-2011 batches have not been awarded post graduation in spite of completing their course.

Student of 2009 batch, Harsha Raj Gatty and students of 2008 batch Reena S and another student had dispatched a legal notice, saying that they will be forced to take legal action if the college fails to give them their degree within seven days.

However, the College in a letter has hinted the students to avoid legal action stating that “In a legal process, it is necessary to involve government of Karnataka, Mangalore University and University Grants Commission of India (UGC). It will be a time consuming process. Now the issue is in its final stages of being resolved, any legal action will further complicate the matter and it will be a long process. We are hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon.”

The College has also said that it is trying to resolve the issue in the utmost interest of the students.

“We have convinced Mangalore University with considerable efforts to award the degree under the nomenclature ‘MCMS’ with effect from the academic year 2008.

The University has agreed in principle. The issue is before Mangalore University syndicate. The Vice Chancellor has assured to send the proposal to the Chancellor and the State Government after getting it approved in the next syndicate meeting,” the College said in the letter to the students.

“The College in the letter has said that the issue is in final stages and it will be resolved soon. However, I have received such assurances in the past and have lost faith in them as no concrete action was taken.

I shall stand by my decision of initiating legal proceedings, until I see concrete action and get written assurance that I will be awarded MCMS degree,” says Harsha Raj Gatty.
