Temple chief's appointment flayed

Last Updated 20 June 2012, 16:05 IST

Kodagu Ekikarana Ranga office-bearers have taken objection to the appointment of Manu Muthappa as the President of Talacauvery-Bhagamandala Temple Managing Committee.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, office-bearers M K Appacchu, A A Thammu Poovaiah, Thapanda Nayana, Nandetira Raja Madappa and T M Pramod Somaiah said the appointment of Manu Muthappa was politically motivated and comes as a clear violation of Religious Endowment Act.

According to Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Act 1997 and amendment to Section 25 (2) D and 3 (III), those who are elected to the temple managing committee should not be a office-bearer of any political party.

However, here Manu Muthappa is functioning as a spokesperson of the district BJP unit. At the same time, Muthappa had also assaulted Madikeri Taluk Tahsildar during RMC election and the Superintendent of Police had even filed a charge sheet against him.

The police department has withheld his name temporarily, from the rowdy sheet list, since August 2010. Electing a person having such a criminal background, to the post of the president of temple managing committee is clear violation of the Act.

“It was Manu Muthappa who had stopped mass feeding organised by the Ranga during Cauvery Theerthodbhava. If the government fails to repeal its decision, then the Ranga will approach the High Court,” they warned.
