Motamma welcomes English medium in govt schools

Council Opposition Leader Motamma has welcomed the decision of the state government to start English medium in government schools from sixth standard.

Speaking at a discussion on need for English medium in Government schools, organised by Madhyama Samskrithi Prathishtana in Chikmagalur on Saturday, he said the children from rural areas will get justice with the government’s decision.

It will help the students to face competitive world and also will help in checking donation menace by the private schools. If children learn English at the primary school level, then they can face the challenges in the field of science and technology.

There is nothing wrong in learning other language by respecting Kannada. “We need to understand any subject in mother tongue, even if we study in other medium of instruction. In this background, learning English will not affect Kannada language,” she said.

By introducing English medium in schools, the government can check the mushrooming of private schools.

The teachers should be trained to teach in English medium. Kannada lovers need not worry over the survival of Kannada language with the introduction of English medium, she said.Sakharayapattana Government PU College Principal H M Rudraswamy said “we have several individuals who have studied in English medium and have become famous in Kannada.”

District Kannada Sahitya Parisht President N S Shivaswamy said by there is opposition to the introduction of English medium in Government schools. There is a myth among the people that by studying in Kannada, one can not become expert in various fields.

Retired lecturer B Thipperudrappa said “English is not foreign language today. It has become part of India. British have contributed a lot to the growth of Kannada language.

English teachers and litterateurs have played a pivotal role in enriching Kannada language. In this background, learning English is not wrong. Education is for change. To accept the changes took place with the globalisation, we need to learn English.”

Madhyama Samskrithi Prathishtana President Gauramma Basave Gowda said “English medium is necessary but inevitable.”
