A traffic sub- inspector and constable attached to the Malleswaram Traffic police station were arrested by the Lokayukta police on Wednesday evening, after conducting a drive on various fine collection points in the City.

Sub-inspector Shivanna and constable Sheikh Anwar, who were at a fine collection centre near Orion Mall, were arrested by the Lokayukta police after they were found to have excess money with them.

The police watched them collect money from lorry and truck drivers for an hour before arresting them.

Search of the two revealed Rs 12,650 on Shivanna and Sheikh Anwar was found to possess Rs 23,000. The duo seemed to have kept a meticulous count of the vehicles and whether the money had been paid for a particular month.

A small book that was recovered, had a list of vehicle numbers matched against the various months of the year. Whenever a vehicle seemed to have paid the amount for particular month, there was a tick mark in that box.

Police are investigating whether Sheikh Anwar was collecting the money on behalf of the traffic inspector, as he was a pillion or a person assigned to the inspector. The police also said that the money collected from each truck or lorry depended on the weight and the cargo it was carrying.

Searches were also conducted in other areas.

At Byatarayanapura, a search of the interceptor vehicle revealed a shortage of Rs 5,750. Searches were also conducted near UB City and KR Puram.
