Five schoolchildren die in wall collapse

Five school children died and two sustained serious injuries in an incident of wall collapse inside the compound of a government run upper primary school at Ranpur in Odisha’s coastal Nayagarh district on Monday afternoon.

The school and mass education department of the state government has already ordered an inquiry into the mishap. “I have asked the principal secretary of the department to conduct an inquiry and submit a report as early as possible,” school and mass education minister Pratap Jena said.

The head mistress of the school and three anganwadi workers have been placed under suspension following the tragic incident.

According to a report reaching the state headquarters, the mishap took place when the students were taking lunch inside a room within the school compound belonging to the anganwadi workers.

While three children died on the spot, two others died in a hospital here. The two injured students have been shifted to a city hospital. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to families of the dead children.
