Simple magic of pure white

Last Updated 15 May 2009, 12:45 IST

I have always felt that it's a man in love with the female form who can design the most appealing outfits and bring out the best in a woman. That's Ramesh Dembla in a nut shell. A designer with flair and panache, every collection he plans is like conjuring up a magical set of garments, like a wizard out of a never-ending hat of ideas. Looking through Ramesh's latest Angels Collection was no different. It was simple, ethereal and elegant, like the Krishna Dembla line which has evolved over the years.
Ramesh could easily pass off as one of his models dressed casually in a sleeveless tee showing off his delectable Krishna tattoo on his fore arm, as he ran me through the Angels Collection, that had created such a great response with the city's glitterati. Every gown was pristine pure white and unlike Ramesh's penchant for heavy embellishment, in this collection, the accent was more on cuts and flow, in short,  a dramatic red carpet look was the focus for every gown. So Ramesh chose the most famous bods and faces to show off his line including a number of new film stars. Some of the very skimpy topped gowns had shrugs to give them a more formal and sophisticated look. Ramesh had indulged in using large faux stones imported from Hong Kong with which he had done heavy work around the waist of the gowns. Pearls too had been used on the collar or heavily embroidered on top with a transparent flowing floor length skirt, swirling around the models’ hips. Another gown had the whole closely fitted top of silver cut work in front and loosely hanging chains along the back for breath taking effect. Many of the gowns were made from silk imported from Hong Kong and also locally sourced. All were a distinctive pure white with no ivory or clotted creams thrown in for effect.
If there is a collection fit for the silver screen with all the stars out to show them off then a feather boa had to be part of the line. Models Vyjyanthi from Colombo and Dawn Mortimer from Goa with their sleek torsos, showed off these gowns wrapped in boas to advantage.  Priya Nayak with her exotic looks and height, wore a white Kimono with her tiny waist tightly corseted with an inky black belt embellished with motifs. Yet another gown was worked with flamboyant effect around a necklace with large stones. "I created the choker and then worked the gown as an attachment around it," explained Ramesh.
But the star of the show was Riya Sen in a gown of fine lace layered on net. Geometric designs embellished the entire top of the dress with a cowl collar in front and a deeper cowl behind. Riya had on a pair of dramatic angels wings to accentuate the angelic effect. Silk, crepe georgette fabrics were used. Feathers, strings, stones along the pallau with brocade underskirts which showed through the net body. To conclude, the Krishna Dembla Angles collection left one drowned in white romance!
