Two more judges held in AP bail scam

Last Updated 11 July 2012, 20:13 IST

The Andhra Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested two district judges D Prabhakar Rao and K Lakshminarasimha Rao for their involvement in the bail-for-bribe scam.

Prabhakar Rao, former legal secretary to state Election commission, who was suspended last week, was also taken into custody. Lakshminarasimha Rao's arrest came following a confessional statement by a real estate businessman R Suryaprakashbabu who had been functioning as a mediator between judges and criminals seeking bail.

The AP High Court suspended judge Lakshminarasimha Rao after he was taken into custody by the investigators of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The CBI court judge T Pattabhirama Rao, who gave bail to Gali Janardhana Reddy, is already in jail along with his son Ravichandra, retired sessions judge Chalapathi Rao and rowdy sheeter Yadagiri. The BJP legislators of Karnataka, Somasekhar Reddy and Suresh Babu who are also termed as abettors and accused in the bail-for-bribe case, are yet to be arrested.

The AP High Court had also rejected the plea of tainted Judge Pattabhirama Rao of the CBI court for special status on the ground that he had made a mockery of the judiciary. Now, he is being tried as an ordinary criminal in the same court where he was a judge. Yadagiri revealed that bail for Gali was a Rs 20-crore deal. The police also made surprise seizures of huge cash from the home of Yadagiri after his custodial questioning early this week.
