Depressed over a family dispute, five members of one family tried to commit suicide by consuming poison here on Monday.

The incident took place at Rajeevnagar in Udaygiri police station limits. Having been unsuccessful in their attempt, the family of five have now been admitted  to K R Hospital.

The members have been identified as 35-year-old Mubeen Taj, wife of Noor Ahmed residing in Rajeevnagar first stage. Others include Taj’s daughters 17-year-old Noor Tanziya, 15-year-old Noor Sadiya, 14-year-old Noor Afsa Bhanu and 12-year-old Noor Saziya.

The five had mixed pesticide with milk and drank it at around 5 pm on Monday. When Noor Ahmed came to the house, he saw the five suffering and admitted them to K R Hospital.

Noor Ahmed, a car driver, had two wives. He had divorced the first wife Maimun Taj, who is residing in Bangalore. Maimun Taj’s daughter Tasmiya had left her husband along with gold ornaments and was staying in her father’s house at Alim Nagar.

During her stay, she had an argument with Ahmed’s second wife Mubeen Taj. Mubeen Taj and her four children consumed poison following the argument about gold ornaments, said Udaygiri police inspector K T Mathews Thomas. A case has been registered.
