Face-to-face admissions for OBC quota

SC/ST students get another shot at a DU seat
Last Updated 16 July 2012, 20:12 IST

Delhi University has announced face-to-face allotment of seats to students applying under the reserved category. The process will start on July 19 and continue till July 23 for students who scored between 65.99 and 85 per cent.

“Scheduled Castes candidates who could not collect provisional admission slip or could not take admission after collecting the provisional slip, or who have not been allotted any college or course are advised to attend the face-to-face allotment,” stated a release by DU.

DU had earlier sent a notification to all colleges, stating that Other Backward Classes category seats should be filled up and there will be no transfer of OBC seats to general category.

This came after a direction from the union human resource development ministry, asking DU to hold three additional rounds of seat allocation for reserved category students to ensure that maximum seats under this category are filled and not passed on to general category.

Even after the fifth cut-off list came out and admissions to general category seats are closed in most of colleges and courses, reserved category seats in a majority of colleges are still vacant.

Protesters

Students from reserved categories and activists staged protests over non-availability of seats for them in DU, after which DU authorities decided to give admission on face-to-face basis depending on availability of seats in different colleges.

This year, at least 24,000 students have applied for various courses in DU from SC and ST categories, of which 12,000 students have been allotted seats so far.

The release also said the second phase of this arrangement will be declared as per availability of seats after completion of the first phase.
