Apparently depressed over Uttar Pradesh police inaction over his two-year-old daughter’s rape in Bareilly district, a 26-year-old man attempted self-immolation near Parliament House on Thursday.

According to a police official, Mukesh decided to take the extreme step to gain Akhilesh Yadav-led government’s attention.

He was saved by a local police official and is currently admitted at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with 25 per cent burn injuries.

“Mukesh was seen at the high security Vijay Chowk around 2 pm on Thursday with a bottle of petrol. Then he set himself on fire which was immediately doused by a beat constable,” the official said.

The constable forced Mukesh’s head inside a water fountain and a police control room vehicle posted nearby rushed him to RML Hospital.

“He received 25 per cent burns, but his condition is said to be out of danger,” the official added. While Mukesh was being taken to the hospital, he told cops that his two-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted in Bareilly last year.

According to him, he lodged a complaint with UP police, but they are yet to take any concrete action.

The 26-year-old had been seeking help from all quarters since the assault, but justice is still awaited. He finally decided to come to the national capital to seek attention.

Delhi Police now plan to get in touch with their UP counterparts and inform them about Mukesh’s condition.

“We would not investigate the sexually assault allegations as the incident took place in UP. However, we are providing help in terms of medical aid to the victim,” the official said.

Mukesh came to Delhi last week and had been spending his time staying on streets and in gurdwaras.

He had also tried to meet politicians his problem, but failed.
