An elephant attacked a farmer in the Bannerghatta National Park on Friday, days after a software engineer was trampled to death by a jumbo in the reserve forest.

Channaveerappa, a farmer of Ragihalli, had trespassed on the forest area along with two others to graze cattle around 2 pm. Sources said the three were unaware of elephants’ presence in the area.

When the cattle began running helter-skelter, Channaveerappa tried to control them and spotted a wild elephant charging at him. His friends escaped the attack. Channaveerappa sustained severe injuries in his face and was admitted to a nearby hospital.

Though the Park is solar-fenced and entry is strictly prohibited, shortage of fodder for cattle has forced farmers around Ragihalli to trespass on the Park.
