Last Updated 28 July 2012, 17:07 IST

Sand in Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts are being supplied from the dedicated blocks, said PWD Minister P M Udasi.

The minister was replying to the set of questions raised by MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who represents local bodies of Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts, in the upper house.

The minister said that In-charge committee has been constituted for the purpose. The demand for sand is catered to, from the blocks identified in T Narsipura, Nanjangud, Hunsur, K R Nagar, Periyapatna and H D Kote taluks in Mysore district, and Kollegal taluk in Chamarajanagar district.

The minister also clarified that both the districts are following the sand policy that was enforced in the State in 2011. The sand is being lifted from the source, river beds through manpower. The sand lifted will be either stored in the blocks or loaded to the vehicles of customers directly according to the demand. To maintain transparency, tenders are invited from the contractors, and the customers are asked to pay the rate fixed by the government, through demand drafts.

Of the revenue generated from the sales, 25 per cent will be earmarked for gram panchayats. The said amount will be sanctioned in the form of budget after taking the due consideration from the finance department.
