Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit on Friday said that an Assam-like situation could also develop here if  ‘four lakh’ Bangladeshi migrant in the city were not deported immediately.

According to party’s president Vijender Gupta, Delhi government has failed to act despite Delhi High Court’s clear directions to deport illegal migrants from the city.
“The home ministry and state government are not taking court directions seriously as only 42,990 illegal Bangladeshis have been deported in the last ten years while in actuality minimum of 3.65 lakh illegal migrants should have been deported. If nothing is done soon to arrest this situation, we can face Assam-like situation here very soon,” said Gupta.

He accused Delhi government of providing voter Identity-cards, PAN cards and
ration cards to illegal migra-nts rather than deporting them for the sake of vote bank politics.

According to him, 90 per cent of illegal Bangladeshis living in Delhi have collected enough proof to take Indian citizenship.

Taking a serious note of a PIL in 2002, Delhi High Court had given clear directions to the home ministry and chief minister Sheila Dikshit to deport the illegal Bangladeshis immediately.

Court had further given directions to detain at least 100 Bangladeshis each day and hand over them to Illegal Migrants Cell for deportation to Bangladesh.

“Due to the indifferent attitude of the state government, police escape from their responsibility despite the court directions,” said Gupta.

“Investigation in several crime incidents have  revealed that Bangladeshis are involved in heinous crimes like murder, dacoities and loot in the Capital,” added Gupta.

Congress government is deliberately not taking any concrete steps against them due to politics of vote bank for which the city residents will have to pay a heavy price in the coming days, he added.
