DYFI members, who complained of negligence by legislator N Sampangi of widening of roads in the town, were arrested by the police on Wednesday.

The protesters, dressed in black, said the legislator had been postponing the work for three to four years, giving various excuses. “Travelling down such narrow and dilapidated roads day after day is a difficult and dangerous task,” they said.

The activists also blocked the road, gathering near SBM Circle, which affected traffic movement for some time.

The protest affected the legislator’s Independence Day schedule too.

Sampangi, on learning of the protest, arrived at Gudibande at 7.30 am, completed the flag-hoisting formalities and took a detour to Bagepalli.

Every year, the MLA would attend the programme at Bagepalli and then visit Gudibande, where he even spoke before the citizens gathered. This year, he did not even wait to listen to the issues of the protesters.

DYFI members H P Ramanath Reddy, Shivappa, Eeshwarappa, Jayarama Reddy, Ashwathappa, Rajappa, Venkatesh, Srinivas, Abdul Wahab and others were arrested by the police.
