Honour killing: HC quashes bail plea of accused

The Karnataka High Court on Friday upheld the decision of a lower court, quashing the bail plea of an accused in murder for family honour that had created sensation in Mysore several months ago.

Mahadev and his friend Shivakumar had allegedly smothered the former’s sister Smriti alias Shruti to death for loving a youth outside caste. Nazarbad police, who had arrested the duo, had filed a chargesheet.

Both the accused had sought bail from the principal district and sessions court here.The judge had rejected their plea for bail.

Shivakumar, the co-accused moved High Court while Mahadev didn’t. The High Court quashed his bail plea, upholding the decision of the lower court in Mysore.

Smriti, an assistant professor at a government college in Chamarajanagar district, had secretly married a youth from a different caste, thus inviting the wrath of her family — especially her elder brother Mahadev.

Chain-snatched

After a brief lull in chain snatching incidents, a teacher who was returning home from work was robbed of her mangalsutra, worth about Rs one lakh in the city on Friday.
Kamala, 50, a resident of second stage, Vijayanagar, in the city, is the victim.

A teacher at a school in Kumbarakoppal, Kamala was returning home on her moped when two bike-borne youths robbed her of her valuable weighing 55 grams.

The incident occurred a few yards away from her house near a park at 5.15 pm.
Vijayanagar police have registered a case.
