Member of the board, Infosys Ltd, Srinath Batni on Saturday gave a clarion call to the graduates to not to lock selves in the comfort zones, but spread their wings and embrace risks to stand distinct among others in the competitive world.

Delivering graduation day address at the second graduation day at The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) in the city, Batni also an alumnus of the institute, came out with six mantras advising the students to remember them to face the world.

They are: Invest in yourself, aspire to be the best in everything that you do, prepare to move out of your comfort zone, have a global mindset, be prepared to play multiple roles and focus on holistic development.

Delineating, Batni said invest in yourself means make time to get better at what you are doing and also to see what else you can learn to prepare yourself for the next big role or job. The students need to be multi-talented and have the ability to multi-task to achieve success in this dynamic environment.

Aspire to be the best stresses on having a mindset of excellence and continuous improvement. Batni said if the students don’t aspire to be the best then they will be losing out for others.

Most importantly, the graduates even after settling in their lucrative jobs should try to come out of the comfort zone. Though opportunities may not knock on the doors often and often, it’s always one’s ability to learn from the mistakes will throw open more challenging opportunities.

Tips

In what could be said as the ‘tips for the day,’ Batni said, “the competition is no longer local but global. If the students have a knowledge of a foreign language, it will certainly help him in reaching out to the world”.

Before summing up, Batni wanted the graduates to broaden their mindset and also work for the welfare of others.

He said though India produces 7,00,000 engineers every year, close to 35 per cent of the population still remains illiterate and 16 million children are bereft of education. Worse is, more than 300 million Indians still live below poverty line.

Managing director of OWI and professor of Aachen University, Germany, Dr Klaus Lucka said apart from developing creative potential, graduates should pair it with western demands and structure.

A total of 680 students graduated out in different streams. Among them 23 BE students, seven M Tech and four MCA rank holders were feted with gold medals, and 31 students were conferred endowment awards.

Pramod G Kamath of electronics and communication engineering received the highest of six awards in total closely followed by Pooja K of the same department who received five awards.

Chairman of NIE Management Committee S R Subba Rao, chairman emeritus M Sampath Iyengar, principal G L Shekar, controller of examinations T Ananthapadmanabha, secretary S L Ramachandra and others were present.
