Two men have been arrested for trying to extort Rs 2 lakh from a businessman in Sunlight Colony of south-east Delhi, police said on Saturday.

Shaukat Ali Khan, 32, who hails from Bihar’s Gaya district and Saleem Ansari, 25, of Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Budh Nagar district, were held after a complaint by Mohammad Zahir.

On August 18, Zahir reported that he received threatening calls from a man named Shaukat in Bihar.

“The caller identified himself as a extortionist of Bihar and demanded Rs 2 lakh as extortion for the safety of Zahir’s family in Bihar,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (south-east).

Zahir spoke to his parents in Bihar and found that Shaukat was a known criminal. Police then told Zahir to persuade Shaukat to collect Rs 50,000 in IP Park.

Two men came and they were overpowered when Zahir handed over the extortion money, Chaudhry said.
