A Delhi Traffic Police constable was allegedly slapped and his uniform torn by a youth in full view of the public when he was on duty in Lajpat Nagar area of south east Delhi on Thursday.

The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm when constable Amit Kumar was stationed with Lajpat Nagar circle’s traffic unit.

“The constable had noticed a Hyundai Accent car parked in a no-parking zone near Central Market. He was about to get the vehicle towed away with traffic department’s crane when the car’s owner Sumit Sareen intervened,” a police official said.

Sumit objected to the car being impounded, saying that he had parked the vehicle in an authorised parking lot.

On this, constable Kumar asked him to produce the parking ticket. He said if the vehicle was parked at the spot by the parking lot attendant then the parking lot contractor would have to pay a challan.

When Sumit could not produce any parking ticket, Kumar decided to tow away the car to Sriniwaspuri police post.

“It is alleged that Sumit was against the car being impounded and forcefully obstructed traffic officials at the spot from conducting their duty,” the official added.

Then, Sumit in a fit of rage allegedly slapped Kumar and tore his uniform. He is also accused of having used abusive language and threatening Amit of dire consequences.
Meanwhile, a large crowd had gathered at the spot, but no one came to Amit’s aid.

During the melee, a police control room vehicle came to the spot and its staff managed to overpower Sumit.

The accused, a resident of K-Block in Lajpat Nagar II, was subsequently arrested and a case was lodged in Lajpat Nagar police station.

He faces charges of assault, voluntarily causing hurt and obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions under sections 353, 332 and 186 of the Indian Penal Code.
Kumar also underwent medical examination at the AIIMS trauma centre.
