JOIN USIllegal sand deposit worth Rs five lakh stored on the banks of Shimsha river near Doddankanahalli and Thaggahalli near Kestur in the taluk was seized on Sunday.
A team of officials from the mines and geology department seized the sand reserve, estimated at 100 loads, besides 45 ‘kopparike’ (basket like articles used to lift sand from the bed).
The team was led by senior geologist Lakshmamma comprising junior geologist Chandrashekar, tahsildar M K Savitha among others.
A gang indulged in the illegal activity succeeded in making good their escape upon noticing the team.
The tahsildar told the media that stringent action will be initiated by filing a criminal case against the perpetrators behind the incident.
PSI Lokesh and other police personnel were also a part of the team that cracked down on the illegal activity.
