A Delhi court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to a man for killing his foster parents and pregnant wife. They were opposed to him having an extramarital affair with a girl.

The foster parents had adopted him when he was barely a few days old.

Nitin Verma, 28, had stabbed his physically challenged father, mother and his six-month pregnant wife to death in April 2008.

Holding that the convict is a menace to society, additional sessions judge Virender Bhat sentenced him to death, saying life imprisonment will be an inadequate punishment for his crime.

“When he did not spare his own parents and wife and killed them in cold blood, what respect he would show for the lives of others? The convict is like a live bomb, which has the potential of causing a huge catastrophe if not destroyed at the earliest,” the judge said.

“I am of the opinion that life imprisonment will be inadequate punishment in this case, with regard to the nature of the crime and the circumstances in which it was committed,” the judge said.

‘Rarest of rare case’

Refusing to show any leniency to him, the judge said, “The present case amounts to the rarest of rare cases, which shocks the collective conscience of society.”

“The society definitely expects the court to inflict death sentence upon the convict.

There was no justification at all for the convict to commit the grotesque killings. The convict appears to be without any remorse,” the judge said.
