FKCCI to set up own model

Last Updated 06 September 2012, 19:47 IST

Fearing an adverse effect of garbage crisis on investment opportunities, the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FKCCI) has decided to set up its own model system to dispose of waste and set an example to the BBMP.

The project will be taken up at Chickpet on a pilot basis, said K Shiva Shanmugam, the FKCCI president.

“We will implement our model of garbage disposal system in Chickpet within a fortnight. Already we are working with some residents' welfare associations at Padmanabhanagar,” he said.

He said that the garbage problem could turn away investors, who had come to the City with an investment proposal worth Rs 7.62 lakh crore in the last Global Investors’ Meet.

Shanmugam said, “Garbage, stray dogs, buildings of bad quality, age old trees, poor condition of roads, choked drains, rodent menace, dengue and other viral diseases give a negative impression about Bangalore.

The BBMP should not forget that the western countries are quick in issuing advisories to their citizens in India in the event of any threat, including an epidemic outbreak.”

He wondered why a scientific garbage disposal system cannot be adopted in the City.

He blamed the Palike for a lack of transparency in its operations and demanded that watchdog committees be set up in all wards, comprising citizens, NGOs and civic organisations.
