Hostel inmates pour out litany of woes, stage dharna

The students let out a long list of complaints regarding the facilities provided at the hostel.

The students accused the warden of not giving them proper food, ensuring potable water and other basic amenities. They said that good quality vegetables and grams are not being used to cook food at the hostel.

The meal is served at 3 in the noon. No sweets are cooked on festival days. The food prepared is stored in unhygienic conditions. The food prepared in the morning is served in the night also, they let out a litany of complaints.

The inmates said that they are not provided with mats and bedsheets. There are neither buckets to fill water. The drainage is not cleaned regularly.
Upon questioning, the supervisor Nagarathnamma blames students themselves, they alleged pointing out that complaint to Taluk Social Welfare Officer has failed to evoke any response.

Reluctant
The students were reluctant to withdraw the protest even after the Taluk Social Welfare officer Muniyamma and Manager Shafiqulla visited the spot and assured of solving their problems. They insisted that District Social Welfare Officer should come to the spot and refused to withdraw the protest.

However, it was decided that the students and authorities concerned would meet within a week and introduce a sytem wherein the inmates can manage the affairs of the kitchen, jointly.

It was also decided that the officers will take action against any problem brought to their notice by the students’ representative immediately, the hostel inmates agreed  to withdraw their dharna.

Leaders of Dalit Sangharasha Samiti, M Anand, M S Shankar, Narasimha Murthy, Sadashiva, Narayanaswamy, Lakshman and others, who arrived at the spot, expressed their solidarity with the protest of the hostel inmates.
