Contractors not keen on work from CMC fund

Last Updated 16 September 2012, 16:51 IST

The contractors are not coming forward to take up the work in the CMC limits, using the CMC fund. Even after inviting tender for three times, the contractors have not taken part in the tender for few works. This has affected development works in Madikeri.

As a result, the work on developing roads, drinking water supply, borewells, construction of buildings have come to a standstill.

The contractors have not come forward to take up work on repair of CMC quarters near Convent water tank (Rs 2 lakh), laying of road from Elakki Society to Omkareshwara temple road (Rs 4 lakh), asphalting of road in ward number 13 near Chamaraj bungalow (Rs 55,000), temporary shed for sale of dry fish inside market (Rs 50,000), slab drainage work at Thyagaraj colony (Rs 30,000), road in the colony (Rs 20,000). Similarly in drinking water projects, borewells in a new layout at Ward number 6 (Rs 90,000), electrification of borewell as Putani Nagara (Rs 2.20 lakh), work on kitchen near community hall at Ranipete (Rs 50,000), none of the contractors have come forward to take up the work.

It is not that the contractors are not taking up any development works in Madikeri. However, the contractors are showing keen interest in the work under Chief Minister’s fund. The work taken up by the CMC using its fund is emergency work.

The CMC uses the available funds from its expenditure for the work. Hence, there would be delay in releasing the funds to the contractor. Hence, the contractors are not showing keen interest.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, CMC President H M Nandakumar said “it is true that the contractors are not coming forward. There is a delay in making the payment. The CMC has decided to hand over the work to big contractors who take up major projects in the City.”
