JOIN USDevastated at her husband having taken his life three days ago, Annasandra Palya resident Usharani allegedly tried to hang herself with a saree in her house on Sunday afternoon.
But she was rescued by neighbours and is undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans) hospital.
The 40-year-old woman was married to G Kumar, a computer professional, who threw himself into the Ulsoor Lake on September 9. Kumar committed suicide after Usharani walked out on him the previous day with their two children. According to the death note left by Kumar, his wife left him after a fight about the debt crisis that the family is facing.
Usharani, on learning of her husband’s death, returned to Bangalore with her children. She is believed to have been in Tuticorin.
On hearing an alarming sound emanating from Usharani’s house, two neighbours rushed in to check. They grew suspicious because the main door was locked and no one answered their calls. They broke in through a side entrance and found Usharani lying on the ground with a saree tied around her neck. They realised she had attempted suicide and had fallen off in her attempt to hang herself. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital and later referred to Nimhans Hospital.
The case was not yet taken up by the police at the time of going to press. According to persons familiar with the incident, Usharani left a note in her house in which she claimed to have been conned by a woman named Saraswathi, who had asked her to invest in a chit fund business. Apparently, Usharani’s family lost Rs 15 lakh.
A case had been registered at the HAL police station, where Usharani’s husband Kumar gave a written undertaking that he would repay the money shortly. To keep his word, Kumar took a personal loan of Rs 15 lakh and repaid it recently.
However, this landed Kumar in a bigger debt crisis from which he did not emerge. The depression due to the debt, coupled with his wife and children leaving him, consumed his will to live, police had said.
