A 28-year-old woman hanged herself at her house in Shahdara in north-east Delhi after a fight with her husband and mother-in-law, police said.

Family members of the victim alleged that her in-laws killed her for dowry. After investigation, police arrested her husband and the mother-in-law for abetment to suicide.

The victim’s husband, Nitin Sharma, had called police to inform that his wife, Nitu Sharma, had hanged herself from a ceiling fan in their house on Saturday night. “When we reached there we found that Nitu was lying dead on her bed. We took her to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead,” said a senior police officer.

Police did not find any suicide note. Preliminary investigation revealed that Nitu got married to Nitin in 2004 and the couple had two children.

On Saturday night, Nitin came home drunk, saying it was his birthday. Subsequently, he argued with his mother Shalini Sharma and then fought with his Nitu. Then both Nitin and his mother started quarreling with Nitu. After that Nitin went to sleep, police said. Upset over being abused by her husband and mother-in-law, Nitu went to her room and hanged herself. Her brother Manish Sharma alleged that his sister was killed as she was found lying dead on her bed.

He also alleged that the in-laws had been demanding a dowry of Rs 10 lakh and regularly harassing Nitu for not bringing the money.

Acting on the allegations, police are probing the dowry angle and they will take action against the accused if harassment allegations are found true.
