HC bans media coverage of Shopian probe

Last Updated 30 September 2009, 18:43 IST

The directive comes in the wake of leakages of the CBI probe into the case to the media.

Chief Justice Barin Ghosh also directed the CBI not to divulge any details about its investigation to the media or any other agency. The Kashmir High Court Bar Association (KHCBA), which had filed a public interest litigation on the Shopian rapes and murders, dissociated itself from the case.

KHCBA chief Mian Abdul Qayoom said the association had lost faith in the CBI probe. He was referring to the CBI’s preliminary report that the teenage girl Asiya was not raped.
Criticising the government’s decision to transfer the case to the CBI, he said the KHCBA had faith in the probe till it was being conducted by a special investigation team of the police.

Meanwhile, the state government has ordered a probe into the conduct of doctors who conducted the earlier two postmortems on Asiya and her sister-in-law Neelofar. The second team of doctors had in their autopsy report stated that the girl and the woman were raped and then murdered during the intervening night of May 29 and 30.
