Knives out
Last Updated 20 September 2012, 20:05 IST

A surgeon working with a reputed hospital here was severly injured when his colleague stabbed a clinical knife into his chest inside the operation theatre (OT) of the hospital.

The surgeon and the anesthetist were said to have differences over some matters since long.

Last Tuesday, when the incident occurred, both reportedly had a verbal duel before entering the operation theatre for a surgery. When the operation was on, suddenly the anesthetist picked up a knife and pierced it on his colleague's body. The injured surgeon was immediately rushed to another OT and was administered stitches.

However, when local media tried to fetch details, the injured doctor and the hospital management tried to downplay the incident. “It is true that I have stitches in my body. I fell down and had to be rushed to the OT for treatment.

Levelled accident

“It was an unfortunate incident. I do not want to say anything more,” the doctor said. The management of the hospital also described the incident as an “accident”.

The city police said, after the incident came to the fore, preliminary enquiry was conducted, but they could not proceed further because neither the injured doctor nor the hospital authorities registered an FIR.

“When we came to know about the incident, an officer in the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP) and an inspector had gone to the hospital. But we did not proceed further as neither the victim nor the hospital management was keen to file an FIR,” said a source in the city police.

Meanwhile, the event has sent shockwaves in the state and medical fraternity.
