'Kodavas are drifting away from culture'

Addressing a discussion on ‘Kail muhurtha’ organised by Napoklu Kodava Samaja and Karnataka Kodava Sahithya Academy on Wednesday, he said that Kodavas have been distinct from time immemorial because of their traditions, culture and rituals hence they need to safeguard their distinct culture, which is their identity.

The programme was symbolically inaugurated by Napoklu Kodava Samaja President Manavattira Machaiah by shooting a coconut.

Kodava Samaja Member Biddatanda B Belliyappa said that there is a need for Kodavas to safeguard their culture and traditions. “English is necessary but Kodavas need to emphasise on learning Kodava language along with learning English,” he said. He offered ‘ayudha puja’ before commencement of the discussion on ‘Kail muhurtha’.
The programme was presided over by Karnataka Kodava Sahithya Academy President Imudiyanda Rani Machaiah. Napoklu Kodava Samaja Secretary Badumanda Muthappa spoke about ‘Kail muhurtha’ celebration and its significance. Padeyanda Shambhu, Kaliyanda Ganesh and Manavattira Ponnappa bagged first, second and third prize respectively in shooting the coconut game.
