Members of Nayak community urged the authorities concerned to arrest the miscreants responsible for the alleged desecration of a portrait of Valmiki at Shanthipura in H D Kote recently.
Members of the Federation of Zilla Nayak Sanghas, Valmiki Yuvaka Sangha and Sri Valmiki Trust staged a protest demonstration here on Monday against the alleged desecration of the portrait.
They took out a procession from Chamarajeshwara temple and staged a rasta roko at Bhuvaneshwari Circle.
They alleged that the Mysore district administration and the district in-charge minister were trying to hush up the incident and protect the miscreants.
Stating that the act of desecration of the portrait of Valmiki — the great saint, who penned the Ramayana — was condemnable, they sought an inquiry into the incident.
Leaders Gopal, Paramesh, Ravi, G Bangaru, Parashivamurthy, Manjunath, Gopi, Siddaraju and others took part in the protests.
In another incident, the community members staged a protest demonstration at Santhemarali Circle.
They set old, worn-out tyres afire and shouted slogans against the miscreants. They urged the authorities concerned to take steps to avert such incidents in future.
