Outgoing Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia in his farewell message on Friday asked judges to adopt “professionalism and judicial reticence”.

“I have done my duty,” Justice Kapadia, known to be the strict believer in the Constitutional principle of separation of power, told the younger advocates to show “dedication” towards work for success in life.

Addressing a huge gathering at the Supreme Court lawn here, the man, who rose from a class IV employee to become the CJI, gave credit to his wife, Shehnaz saying: “It is my wife who made me whatever I am today.”

“Judges can’t change the world. If you work, your duty in accordance with the Constitution, you served the country,” he said.  Justice Kapadia reminded  fellow judges that principles of discipline, professionalism and judicial reticence should be strongly observed.

“Please remember that a very important medicine in the time of trouble is that you do what you are obligated to do. Our judges need professionalism, objectivity, judicial reticence and knowledge more subtle than intellect,” he said.

Saying that he was a believer, he said: “We are no doers but opportunities are given to us to do something.”An emotional Justice Kapadia satisfied with his work told the gathering that he had not taken a single day off since he was appointed as an additional Judge of the Bombay HC in 1991.
