Palike defines bulk garbage generators

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has classified apartments with more than 10 units as bulk generators for garbage collection purposes. Such apartments will have to make their own arrangement for garbage disposal.

However, garbage will be collected from apartments with less than 10 units.
Palike Commissioner Rajneesh Goel said here on Friday that the BBMP will not insist apartment owners to make their own arrangements for the next two months for garbage disposal. However, the Palike will stop collecting garbage from such units later. He said garbage disposal was an easy task for gated communities since they have huge lung space where garbage could be converted into compost or manure.

The members of Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI) met the BBMP commissioner on Friday to seek clarification on garbage disposal.

Goel said garbage may not be transported to Mandur landfill from October 1 and segregation was the only way to tackle the problem. He said pourakarmikas won’t accept unsegregated garbage from Monday. The commissioner said bulk generators produce about 1,500 tonnes of garbage a day, 60 per cent of which comprise wet waste.

In the event of closure of Mandur landfill, the Palike will direct the wet waste to Chintamani from October 1. A private firm has reportedly come forward to process the wet garbage at its own cost.

Segregation at KR Market

The Palike will depute health inspectors round the clock at KR Market to ensure segregation of waste. Three garbage bins – one for rotten vegetables, fruits and flowers, second one for wet waste and the third bin for dry waste – will be set up at the market.
The wet waste will be utilised for generating biogas and biocompost while the dry waste will be recycled, Goel added. The health inspectors will instantly slap a fine on vendors who violate the arrangement. The system will be extended to other markets based on its success, he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor D Venkatesha Murthy has written to City BJP president Subbanarasimhaiah to ask party cadres take part in the drive on segregation of garbage at source.
