'Revolution needed to check corruption'

Last Updated 01 October 2009, 17:15 IST

Speaking at the DAD (Defence Accounts Department) day celebrations here, the Lokayukta said, “Unless a revolution opposing this dangerous trend is ignited among the citizens, the 85 percent of budget allocated to hundreds of schemes will not reach the downtrodden. It is a threat to the very foundation of democracy. Mahatma Gandhi visualised administration to be taken to the door step of the people. Instead it is corruption and politics which has headed to the grassroots.”

Justice Hegde also lamented the increase in lack of accountability in government machinery.
The Defence Accounts Department, with a history of 259 years of existence, is one of the oldest departments of Government of India and audits about 1.5 lakh crores of defence outlay.
