Dist-level athletic meet from Oct 10

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instructions, Office of the Block Education Officer, Mangalore North Range in collaboration with Urwa Parish Schools will organise ‘Athletic meet 2012-13,’ a district-level sports competitions for primary and secondary school students at NITK grounds in Surathkal on October 10 and October 11.

Inauguration

Addressing news persons on Saturday, District Deputy Director for Public Instruction (DDPI) Moses Jayashekar said that District-in-Charge Minister C T Ravi will inaugurate the programme at 9.30 am while State Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat will preside over the function.

Mumbai Ryan International Group of Institutions Managing Director Grace Pinto will hoist the flag.  Zilla Panchayat President K Koragappa Naik, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLCs Ganesh Karnik and Monappa Bhandary, Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Gulzar Banu, District Health and Education President Ishwar Kateel, Catholic Board of Education Secretary Rev Prof Wilson L Vitas D’Souza, Moodbidri Alva’s Education Institution Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva and MCC Corporator Ashwin Kumar will be the chief guests.

750 athletes

Fr Victor D’Mellow of Urwa Parish School said that as many as 750 athletes from 7 taluks and around 200 judges will be participating in the athletic meet. “The approximate budget is Rs 10 lakh and the Public Instruction department has provided Rs 80,000 already, he said.  

Parish School Physical Director Harish said that the meet will have 73 sports events- both track and field events. They will be divided as eighth standard and under-17 year division.
 Under 17 year competition will include 16 events for boys and 17 events for girls. Those who win first prize in 8th standard category and first and second position in under 17 year category will get eligibility to participate in State-level meet at Chitradurga.

The valedictory function will be held on October 11 at 3.30 pm. Taluk Panchayat President Bhavya Gangadhar will preside over the function.

MCC Deputy Mayor Amitakala, former mayor Praveen Kumar and others will be present.
