Chikkarde colony devoid of facilities

Last Updated 13 October 2012, 17:08 IST

Chikkarde Dalit Colony under Madapura gram panchayat limits is devoid of basic facilities.

There are seven families residing in the colony and there is no road facility to reach the houses of four families.

The 200 metre-long road from Jamboor to Chikkarde has not seen asphaltation for the past 12 years.

The surface of the road has been chipped off. A narrow road leads to the houses of the residents in the colony.

A resident Nagaraj said: “The neighbours had promised to part with their land for laying of a road to the colony. However, the gram panchayat and taluk panchayat representatives have failed to provide any facilities to the colony.”

Keshava and Sarasu couple are residing in a hut in the colony for the last 10 years.

“I had submitted applications seeking a house under Ashraya Yojana several times.

However, all my pleas went in vain,” Keshava said.

“The politicians come to the colony only during election and then never look back at the colony. We have been exercising our franchise for the past 40 years.

However, the situation has not changed in the colony all these years,” said Ponnamma.

Block Congress president K M Lokesh urged the gram panchayat to provide basic facilities to the colony within 20 days.

“If the authorities fail to provide basic facilities, then the Congress will stage a protest in front of the gram panchayat, Lokesh said.
