The militants fired at the commandos attached to Bishenpur district police station when they were patrolling in Leimaram area, about 35 km from here, last night. In the fierce encounter that ensued, three militants were killed and a commando was injured. The identity of the slain ultras was not immediately clear.
An M 16 rifle and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the spot. The injured commando was admitted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.
Over 300 people have been killed by militants in Manipur this year.
