Rain lash TN, claim 14 lives

Heavy rains continued to lash Tamil Nadu for the second day on Friday, even as Regional Meteorological Center here officially declared the onset of the North-East monsoon stating that “rains have commenced over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.”

Most places across Tamil Nadu and several places over Kerala received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, while at least 14 rain-related deaths have been reported till Friday evening from different parts of Tamil Nadu, mainly caused by electrocution, lighting strikes and wall collapse.

Marakaanam in Villupuram district recorded a maximum of 12 cm. Chennai’s arterial roads and low-lying areas have been inundated, as the metro reels under heavy downpour badly affecting vehicular traffic.

In the Cauvery delta, the rains have brought relief to farmers who are desperate to save their standing paddy crop.
