In a bid to prevent diversion of subsidised LPG, a pilot project of Aadhaar-enabled distribution of cylinders to individual households is being implemented at Mysore since January this year in association with three public sector oil marketing companies - IOCL, and BPCL and HPCL.

Subsidised LPG cylinders are being delivered by delivery boys after successful biometric authentication of any family member present in the household on a  handheld device carried to the residents’ doorstep.

So far 50,000 deliveries have been made based on successful Aadhaar authentication in across three LPG distributorships (gas agencies) in Mysore – one each for IOCL, BPCL and HPCL.

In the next phase, the operations would be scaled up in the entire Mysore district, UIDAI chief Nandan Nilekani said. This integration with Aadhaar would help in effective implementation of recent directive of limiting annual cylinder supply to households.

Pilots were also planned to transfer the subsidy amount difference directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries in the later stage, he said.
