Following Cauvery Monitoring Committee’s directive for Karnataka to release around 5 TMC ft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till November 15, political leaders and farmer representatives from Mandya have urged Karnataka government not to draw water from the reservoirs, and have warned of intensifying their agitations if it failed to meet their demands.

The group, comprising Cauvery Hitarakshana Samithi president Madegowda, JD(S) MP N Cheluvarayaswamy, former minister M S Atmananada and others met Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Thursday and urged him not to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Gowda said that Shettar had assured them that the government would not take any steps detrimental to the interests of the farmers of the State. Cheluvarayaswamy said he had appealed to Shettar to invest more time in resolving the Cauvery issue, as opposed to engaging himself with party matters.
