Mechanic dies in scuffle

Last Updated 03 November 2012, 19:44 IST

A scuffle between KSRTC employees affiliated to two different labour unions resulted in the death of a mechanic at the Shantinagar bus depot on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Keshavan, 59.

It is said that Revappa, Prasanna Kumar and Manjunath, members of the CITU, while addressing the employees at the bus depot alleged that the recent settlement between the State government and the KSRTC employees was disappointing and blamed the other labour union, AITUC, for the ‘unfair treatment.’

The CITU members were planning to hold a protest rally on November 9 and Saturday’s meeting was to garner support for the protest.

Apparently provoked by the allegations, Keshavan and Munireddy — mechanics at the depot — and members of AITUC, picked an argument with the CITU members. Soon, a scuffle ensued and CITU members pushed Keshavan around who fell unconscious, alleged Munireddy.

Keshavan was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Initial reports suggested cardiac arrest as the reason for the death.

Munireddy has lodged a complaint with the Wilson Garden police against Revappa, Prasanna Kumar and Manjunath, holding them responsible for the death of his colleague.
The post mortem was conducted at the Victoria Hospital. A senior police officer handling the probe told Deccan Herald that the report was awaited.

He added that samples have been sent to the Forensic Laboratory.
