<p>Deputy commissioner Dr N V Prasad directed tahsildars to provide housing facilities and sites under Ashraya scheme to members of SC/ST communities working in coffee estates in the district.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Speaking at a meeting of the district-level vigilance and monitoring committee on steps taken to prevent atrocities on SC/STs at Fort hall here recently, he said there is a need to conduct a survey on the number of SC/ST families residing inside coffee estates in the district. <br /><br />A committee was constituted comprising tahsildar, social welfare officer and labour inspectors to conduct the survey and provide housing facilities.<br /><br />He said along with housing facilities, education, health and other basic facilities should be provided to SC/ST labourers.<br /><br />Contact police<br /><br />Superintendent of police Manjunath Annigeri said the labourers can contact the nearest police station if they are subject to any atrocity in coffee estates.<br /><br />District social welfare officer J Ganti said financial assistance of Rs 3.57 lakh has been distributed among SC/ST atrocity victims from January to September.<br /><br />CMC commissioner N M Shashi Kumar said there were 23 regular civic workers in the CMC. The civic workers are residing in government quarters, he informed.<br /><br />Paisari lands have been encroached upon by rich land holders in the district. “There is a need to reclaim the encroached lands and distribute them among the poor,” said committee members Palani Prakash, Veerabhadra and Muthappa.<br /><br />Member Muthappa said measures should be taken to install the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Madikeri.<br /><br />Zilla panchayat assistant executive engineer Mahadevaswamy, Virajpet tahsildar Nagaraju and others were present.</p>
